Alejandro M. Spiotta, M.D.

Alejandro M. Spiotta, M.D.

Alejandro M. Spiotta, M.D., is an associate professor of neurosurgery & neuroendovascular surgery, surgical director of the neurointensive care unit, and associate program director of the neurosurgery residency program at the Medical University of South Carolina in the Department of Neurosurgery. Dr. Spiotta received his M.D. from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in 2005, and his undergraduate degree in molecular biology from the University of Pennsylvania College of Arts and Sciences in 2001. He completed an internship in general surgery, residency in neurological surgery, and fellowship in neuroendovascular surgery at the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio. Dr. Spiotta is board eligible by the American Board of Neurological Surgery and is a member of numerous professional and scientific societies including the Congress of Neurological Surgeons, Society of Neurointerventional Surgery, and Neurocritical Care Society. He reviews manuscript submissions for several peer reviewed journals and has co-authored greater than 80 peer-reviewed original research articles.

Dr. Spiotta's research focus is device development, outcomes research in cerebrovascular disease, implementation of endovascular simulation as training tools among residents and fellows, as well as advanced multi-modality brain monitor care for the care of traumatic brain injury and subarachnoid hemorrhage. His clinical interests are neurosurgery and neuroendovascular surgery. He specializes in acute stroke thrombectomy, aneurysm coiling and microsurgical clipping, arteriovenous malformations, carotid stenosis, carotid stenting and carotid endarterectomy, cerebrovascular and endovascular neurosurgery, dural arteriovenous fistula, EC-IC bypass, and moyamoya disease.
